Who we are
African Outrides: that's Freda and De Wet — freshly married, passionate riders and Namibia freaks.
De Wet (36) was born in Namibia and loves his country. With more then 10 years of experience as a manager at various lodges and campsites, he has a large network of contacts and plenty of experience in the tourism sector and as a tour guide.
Freda (37) is originally from Germany and has been living in Namibia for 5 years now. As a specialised tour guide for horse tours and volunteers, she knows the challenges that the country poses for horse keeping and can therefore give her recommendations with the best knowledge and conscience. Even during her time as a guide, horse welfare was her top priority.
We also have our own small horse stable outside Windhoek, where our private horses live. The Bush Western Stable offers riding courses on an irregular basis and Freda is a mobile western trainer and animal photographer in the Windhoek area.
Horse holidays in Namibia
“Riding abroad? Only conceivable for me if I know that the horses are doing well!’” - AND WE GUARANTEE THAT!
Our idea to offer hand-picked riding holidays was born from this attitude. We have visited all the ranches personally and convinced ourselves of the quality of the horses and husbandry on site. We are also in constant contact with our partners so that we can react promptly to any changes relevant to the tour (e.g. drought, illness, etc.).
Horse husbandry in Namibia
Horse or animal husbandry and farming are a very special challenge in Namibia. In a desert country that is plagued by a persistent drought, you have to have a very special passion to farm here. Especially just before the rainy season. When it hasn't rained for more than 6 months, such a life is tough —
for both humans and animals!
For this reason, we may not want to recommend certain places during the dry season because the horses don't have enough on their ribs to endure long tours. After all, horse welfare is very important to us!
Why
Namibia?
First of all, Namibia is beautiful! The vastness, the landscape, the wildlife and the sunsets are so diverse, unique and therefore incomparable. From the back of a horse, you can slow down and immerse yourself in the ‘African Experience’. The Namibian horses are super tough, persistent and have strong nerves. Not comparable with European stable horses, where they would give up, Namibian horses go the extra mile.
On the other hand, tourism brings money into the country and therefore also to the farms. Paying guests enable the farmers to buy feed for their animals and upgrade their equipment.
